1899 Wakefield, West Yorkshire - R.H.Barker & Son Ltd, one of many spinning mills in the city at the turn of the century, take a gamble by building a sock factory on adjoining land. They’re selling so much of their ‘Star’ quality yarn to the Leicester hosiery trade they start to produce their own socks.
1901 The Star Knitting Co. Ltd is founded. (Holding company of PROSTAR).
1914-18 The entire plant converts to produce socks for H.M. Forces and the war effort.
1918 Fuelled by the nation’s appetite for sporting excellence between the wars, PROSTAR (Star) socks are worn by practically every football, rugby and hockey club in the U.K.
1939-45 Once again, military socks take over production for urgently required Army, Navy and Air Force supplies.
1952 PROSTAR (Star) climbing socks are selected by the Everest team led by Sir John Hunt on the first ascent of the World’s highest mountain.
1974 A change of name to Star Sportswear Ltd. By now the company has expanded into jersey and shorts production, creating the only football kit company in Europe manufacturing the entire kit on a single site. With customers in over 20 countries, PROSTAR becomes the adopted name for all its football products.
1976 PROSTAR (Star) socks again conquer Everest on the Barclays-sponsored ascent led by Chris Bonnington.
2000 PROSTAR launch the first comprehensive training range.
2001 In their Centenary year, PROSTAR are proud to team up with new signing, this years F.A. Cup semi-finalists, Wycombe Wanderers.
2005 PROSTAR opens wholly owned German subsidiary, to target the growing German and European markets.
2006 PROSTAR launches their new website, developed for football clubs, with online catalogue and kit builder allowing clubs to create, co-ordinate, save and request quotes for their team kit.
2007 PROSTAR launches their new trainingwear website with all the functionality of the football website.
